Everything exists within certain perimeters. Well at least if that’s what we believe, then we believe it’s only right to act within those bounds if we are to succeed at any particular thing. But what happens when following the rules makes it such that it’s impossible to pick us out in a crowd?
This is the social media dilemma.
While there are so many tools, gadgets, tips and tricks, none of these are exclusive and eventually, when practiced by the billions of people online, we end up looking exactly like each other in the quest to set ourselves apart.
Being and staying unique shouldn’t have to be so difficult.
Here are some easy and practical ways to set yourself or your brand apart online:
Determine your message
What exactly are you looking to achieve. If you were to describe your online persona, how would it act on social media, what would it look like on a page, how would you build up this energy you wish to portray online? Is it a trend setter or a follower (there is nothing wrong with following so long as it is not copying)? Is your online alter ego risky or subdued, quirky or conservative, carefree or militant? These are important aspects to set yourself apart. No matter which of these options you choose no one will be able to do it quite like you, which brings us to our second element of setting yourself or brand apart online.
Be you
It’s the biggest cliche, yet it never gets old. We’ve heard so many times that we thrive off the guarantee that no-one else alive is like us, some have even called this a ‘power’. If you believe that, then you should know there is no boundary or limit to this power. In as much as you exercise it in other areas of your life, you can also exercise it on line. You are the secret ingredient. Bring out your online persona with some flare and bravery while remaining sincere and genuine. Remember, even if you (or your brand) are out there or subdued, ultimately people buy into truth, so be truly you and be consistent, it will draw in the crowd.
Be accessible
So many people and brands lose their humility once they’ve made it online. No one is saying let people take advantage of you, but at no point is it a good idea to lose the human touch – compassion, warmth and approachability will set you apart. People want to know that they are interacting with an actual person behind the handles, your reactions and interactions must stay on brand. Imagine talking to Susan only to have them respond like Natalie … that would confuse the receiver.

Stay on brand and within message and trust that when offline conversations happen about you or your brand they will align with your mission online if you stick to these three tips to set yourself apart.
So while you should definitely look at the trends, don’t do everything you see being done. Always ask yourself: does it align with my message, is it me, will it keep me accessible?
